When Good Domains Go Bad

The Danger Of Letting Domains Expire

This week, I came across a disturbing story about a kids book website that really made me stop and think. A website linked from a range of children’s books went down after the domain expired. Sounds simple enough, right? Except someone else bought that domain, and before long, a new site appeared in it’s place, full of adult content. Teachers, parents, and schools were still using that same link on recommended reading lists, so you can imagine the shock.

It got me thinking about how easy it is for this to happen to anyone. Old links live forever on printed flyers, business cards, and in old emails or online directories. Even if you’ve moved your website to a new address, there’s a good chance people (and Google) are still clicking the old one. And if someone else owns it, you’ve lost control of what they see next.

Why Domains Expire So Easily

Owning a domain isn’t a one-time thing. It’s more like renting a space on the internet. You pay for it each year (or every few years), and if you forget to renew, it’s up for grabs.

And people are watching for that. There are businesses and even automated bots that track expired domains and buy them up the moment they become available. Sometimes it’s for legitimate SEO reasons, but not always. Some buy them purely for the traffic or the reputation attached to the name. Others use them for much worse, redirecting visitors to harmful sites or using that old trust to trick people into giving away information.

What Can Go Wrong When You Lose Control of a Domain

Brand Damage

If your old web address suddenly leads to something you’d never associate your business with, the damage can happen fast. Even if it’s not your fault, people remember your name, not the technical reason behind it.

Security Risks

A more dangerous scenario is when someone copies your old site and pretends to be you. They might ask people to log in, create an account, or connect via Microsoft or Google. Since many people reuse passwords, it’s an easy way for attackers to get hold of real credentials and even access business systems.

Lingering Links

Here’s the thing: old links don’t die. They’re on PDFs, in old emails, printed materials, even in cached search results. So even if your new website is live and healthy, people might still find and click the old one. And they’ll assume it’s yours.

Why It’s About Responsibility, Not Just Tech

I think this is the part that often gets overlooked. When you buy and use a domain, you’re not just protecting your business name… you’re protecting the people who trust it.

Anyone clicking a link with your name on it expects it to be safe. If it leads somewhere harmful or deceptive, it’s not just a technical issue; it’s a breach of trust. That’s why keeping your domains secure and up to date isn’t just good practice, it’s the responsible thing to do.

Simple Ways to Stay in Control

The good news is that it’s pretty easy to avoid this kind of problem once you know how.

Turn on auto-renewal

Make sure your domains renew automatically and that your payment details are current.

Register for a few years at a time

That way you’re not relying on annual reminders that are easy to miss.

Own the key variations

Grab the .co.uk, .com, and other close versions of your brand name before someone else does.

Audit your web presence

Every now and then, check where your domains point and whether any old ones are still live or redirecting.

Get a trusted IT partner to manage it
