Can UK Businesses Rely On Microsoft’s Windows 10 Position?

Hold on to your hats. More Windows 10 news that’s good for some, but not you

Itโ€™s been a rollercoaster ride for Windows 10โ€™s end-of-life. First, Microsoft said support would end in 2025. Then came the promise of paid updates, followed by the option of free updates if you jumped through hoops. And now? A new twist. Thanks to pressure from the European Unionโ€™s Digital Markets Act, Microsoft has agreed to give users in the European Economic Area (EEA) a free extra year of security updates.

But hereโ€™s the catch: the UK is not included. That means while headlines may sound reassuring, UK businesses running Windows 10 Pro are still on the clock, and that clock is ticking fast.

And letโ€™s be honest: with all these U-turns, many business owners are left wondering whether Microsoftโ€™s position will ever stop wobbling. Itโ€™s a bit like being stuck on a merry-go-round you never asked to ride. The safer bet? Step off the carousel of confusion and start planning your move to Windows 11.

What Microsoft Has Announced

Microsoft will officially stop supporting Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. After that, no more feature updates, improvements, or mainstream support will be delivered.

To ease the transition, Microsoft introduced Extended Security Updates (ESU). This means extra security patches for those who canโ€™t move away quickly. Recently, under EU regulatory pressure, Microsoft softened its stance:

  • In the EEA, users now get one year of free ESU (until October 2026), with no strings attached.
  • In the UK, businesses are excluded from this deal. Instead, the original ESU plan still applies:
    • Pay around $30 per device, per year (UK pricing TBC), or
    • Use Microsoft Rewards points, or
    • Link devices to a Microsoft Account and sync certain data.

Itโ€™s also worth noting:

  • ESU only covers critical security fixes. No new features or performance improvements.
  • Built-in apps may lose support sooner, though Microsoft Edge and WebView2 are covered until 2028.
  • To qualify, devices must be running the final Windows 10 release: version 22H2.

In other words, ESU is a safety net, not a fresh lease of life.

What UK Businesses Can Actually Do

If youโ€™re still on Windows 10 Pro, your choices are limited. In practice, there are five main paths:

  1. Enrol in ESU โ€“ Budget for the annual per-device fee, or use Microsoftโ€™s account linking or rewards scheme.
  2. Stay patched on 22H2 โ€“ Ensure all devices are on the final version before the deadline, or risk losing eligibility.
  3. Harden security โ€“ Use strong endpoint protection, patch all third-party apps, remove unused software, backup data, and segment older devices if you must keep them.
  4. Prepare for software support to end โ€“ Vendors of critical tools (accounting, payroll, CRM, browsers) often drop older OS versions soon after end-of-life. Test your apps regularly.
  5. Plan your migration โ€“ Whether to Windows 11 or another platform, set a timeline and budget. ESU is only a short-term bridge.

Why Upgrading to Windows 11 Still Makes Sense Now

Even with ESU as a fallback, upgrading sooner rather than later is the smarter business decision. Hereโ€™s why:

  1. Hardware readiness
Not all PCs meet Windows 11 requirements, such as TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Waiting could mean scrambling to replace multiple devices at once. A costly surprise.
  2. Vendor support
Software providers will begin dropping Windows 10 support from late 2025. If your business relies on line-of-business apps, you canโ€™t afford downtime.
  3. Security
ESU covers only known threats. Windows 11, by design, is more secure and comes with stricter built-in protections.
  4. Staff adoption
Upgrading early gives your team time to get comfortable with the new interface and features, avoiding a stressful last-minute shift.
  5. Productivity gains
Windows 11 offers better performance, memory management, and access to Microsoftโ€™s new AI tools like Copilot. Staying on Windows 10 means missing out on these advantages.
  6. Reputation
Running an end-of-life operating system sends the wrong signal to clients and partners. Upgrading shows your business is modern, secure, and trustworthy.

Nxt Steps

The truth is simple: while businesses in the EU enjoy a temporary reprieve, UK companies are still bound by the original rules. That means ESU is available, but only as a paid or restricted option. Itโ€™s a short safety net, not a long-term strategy.

And given Microsoftโ€™s habit of changing direction, who knows whether this is the final twist in the Windows 10 saga? There may be more loops to come but building your IT strategy around second-guessing Redmondโ€™s next move is hardly a recipe for peace of mind. The clearest, most reliable option is to get on board with Windows 11 and leave the flip-flopping behind.
